Kilimanjaro challenge
Amount raised so far - £815.00 GBP
What: Mt. Kilimanjaro climb
Who: Bpositive supporters Pam, Alex and Amy Date: 3rd-10th September 2014 Details: Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest 'walkable' mountain in the world. The trek to the summit is magnificent and spectacular 5 to 9 night undertaking, to rank amongst the greatest outdoor challenges on the planet. Bpositive supporters Pam, her son Alex and his colleague Amy will undertake the huge effort of reaching the summit in order to raise as much awareness and money as they can for Bpositive. Why this challenge? By Pam Woodbridge The climb will challenge us all, not just the altitude as we are going up to 5,895m - but the day-to-day perseverance it will take us to reach the summit. We will be sleeping in tents and a couple of nights will be below freezing point. There will be no showers, no proper toilets, and no way of washing our gear. It will take 6 days walking to get to the highest point, then 2 days to get back down. We then have a night in a hotel with running water, electricity, and beer. The next day we leave for a 4 day safari one of the highlights is the Ngorongoro crater where we descend 2000 feet into the crater, this has been called the worlds largest wildlife zoo. We are all exited about this challenge and hope to generate interest and awareness for Bpositive. Why Bpositive? By Pam Woodbridge My youngest son Andrew grew up with Jonjo and went to the same schools for more than 8 years. Once they both hit 18 Jonjo became a frequent visitor to our house and I remember, on many occasion, serving both the boys breakfast to help cure their hangovers. After so many years of getting to know Jonjo, and as a Mother you grow close to your son's friends - especially close friends, I was saddened to hear the news from Andrew that Jonjo had fallen sick with what we now know was Leukeamia. However, regular updates of Jonjo's progression were always welcomed and to now see all the great work he is doing with patients and families who are in a similar situation and having the courage to set up his own charity is humbling and inspiring to say the least. Once I knew we were heading to Mt Kilimanjaro the opportunity to raise money for Jonjo's charity was too big to pass and I also understand its in the same week that Andrew and Jonjo take on the huge Hero of Hamelin cycle event - another challenge i'm sure Jonjo will overcome!!
